Do you think girls are so cool at Karate?
You see, I found this book really enjoyable. It's about a boy called Lee that thought that he can be a highest rank at his Karate Dojo. But how wrong he was. A girl came in. He insisted that she was a new white belt but when he looked at his belt and her belt, Lee's eyes were nearly cooked ready to come out of their sockets. He was shocked. She had brown belt with black tips. He still thad to earn his own. Then they work together when bullies surrounding them.... Even though I'm 11 and I never knew anyhing about Karate, I found it very interesting. I suggest everybody to read this exiting new series. I really love the series and who likes fantasies will love it too. Happy reading.

In reality, Lex is using his inheritance as a cover as he and a few men investigate some counterfitters. The Grand and Wonderful Day (Little Golden Book)
Published in Hardcover by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (December, 1995)
Authors: Mary Packard and Darrell Baker
Average review score:

Adorable
This was a favorite of my son and I when he was little. It's predicated on two mysteries: What "grand and wonderful thing" is going to happen today, and just why are Pooh's friends all away when he visits them? The text is very Pooh-oriented ("Although the honey was yummy in Pooh's tummy, it did nothing to jog his memory".... "being a bear of very little brain"... and a song that ends, "rum tiddly tiddly tum,") and the whole book has a ring of authenticity. There's even a mention of the mildly scary "heffalumps and woozles." All turns out well: "...I just remembered that no bear ever had such grand and wonderful friends." The book has 25 pages, with simple, uncluttered pictures on each page.

Grandmother
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (April, 1979)
Author: Jeannie Baker
Average review score:

A YOUNG GIRL'S LOVE FOR HER GRANDMOTHER
.

This is one of Jeannie Baker's earliest books, being first published in 1978. It is a tale of a young girl (almost certainly Jeannie) visiting her grandmother's house.

The story couldn't be simpler, but it is delightfully charming. The real beauty of Jeannie Baker's books is her amazing ability to create the very life-like collages that illustrate her pages.

Grandmother's house is almost hidden behind a wildly overgrown garden. The subtle message is that because of her age (and widowhood?) the garden has got away from her. The architectural detail of the house is magnificent, with filigreed iron lace work on the exterior and a superb carved mantle around the fireplace.

You suspect Jeannie's artistic talents must have been inherited from her grandmother for in the garden are carved stone figures that she said she carved long ago.

We share the simple joys of sitting with grandmother in front of the fire drinking tea and eating chocolate cake, and helping to knit a scarf of rainbow colors.

For those readers who know Jeannie's later works it is interesting to see how her style and technique have evolved since 1978. These days her work has a much stronger environmental message such as seen in "Where the Forest Meets the Sea". Her collage methods of illustration have become increasingly sophisticated, but the very domestic scenes and sentimental story line seen in "Grandmother" is genuinely appealing.

Hopefully we will soon see this book back in print.

Handbook of Highway Engineering
Published in Hardcover by Krieger Publishing Company (August, 1982)
Author: Robert F. Baker
Average review score:

The definitive book on Highway Engineering
Like the title of my review states, this is the definitive book on this subject. If you're ever curious about highways or their engineering be sure to check this out. It is more than worth the price as it provides months of entertainment on a subject that, quite frankly, isn't that interesting to most people.
